The Bashobama Machine: Getting Screwed 24/7

Is it just me? Is it because of what I read? Who I read? Nobody will believe it, but I actually try to see both sides of each equation. I know, this blog sticks it to the Christian Right and Right Wingnuts, so I look like I'm on one side throwing rocks at people who are also throwing rocks at me. Yeah, it's war.

But doesn't it look like Christofascists (excuse me, but "social conservatives" is neither accurate nor appropriate) were prepared before last year's election to automatically despise Barack Obama for whatever reason they could muster up? Well before the I-hope-he-fails-Limbaugh affair, people were sharpening their claws with glee!

They all seemed ravenous for a kill. Maybe in the wake of Bush's presidency of "preemptiveness" they couldn't shake off the feeling that there was an enemy out there waiting to be killed.

Kill or be killed.

Did I have the same feelings eight years ago? I was resigned to a presidency of pointless and stupid attempts at being a "compassionate conservative", but I didn't come close to any form of maniacal hatred (that took time!). And what of 9/11? If it happened today would these political tigers and jackals give Obama a break? Liberals supported Bush in his handling of it. The conspiracy theories didn't happen until the 9/11 Commission wanted to ask Bush some questions and he refused, then relented with strange conditions. And when Bush declared himself a "uniter," there were at least some liberals struggling to give him the benefit of a doubt.

To the left is a perpetual motion machine. It deals in the laws of physics and geometry. Does it do anything? Yes. It operates an Archimedes Screw. At the top of this post is a composite picture of another kind of machine: an Bashobama Machine. All but four are in the media. This machine is not only tireless, it never gets any sleep or rest. It keeps screwing Barack Obama, our 44th President 24/7.

I think it was a pact of sorts: "no matter what this man accomplishes, we MUST bring him down!" It's evident in Sean Hannity's constant character assasination, in Ann Coulter's attacks on Michelle Obama, in Michele Bachmann's senseless rantings about Second Amendment Rights. And, yes, in Rush Limbaugh's logic that anything Barack Obama thinks or does is bad for America.

They seem to have never left a Palin rally.

They (and not, as some think, fringe hate groups) are responsible for Obama's tight security. They mock his use of teleprompters, oblivious to the fact that we had a President whom some suspected could not read at all (especially not his PDBs). We now have a president who chooses his words very carefully, but when a slip occurs, they land on it like a duck on a June bug.

We now have a president who is preparing the United States in dealing with global issues on equitable terms with other countries instead of looking at them with a sort of benign contempt coupled with a feeling of superiority. We may have a true statesman and diplomat as a president. He seems to have the transparency we need to function as a democratic nation. But to the people who comprise the "Bashobama Machine," he is a socialist to be feared and held in contempt.

Hannity, Coulter, Limbaugh, Murdoch, O'Reilly, Rove, Cheney, Beck, Bachmann. To name a few. A machine. Of perpetual motion. Programmed only for destruction.

Holy Hannity! Notre Dame Doesn't Know What It Means To Be Catholic Today!!

Ah, maybe that's because Notre Dame is TODAY,
while the Vatican is soooo YESTERDAY!

The VERY Catholic Sean Hannity was at it again today: Obama-bashing brought on by the (by now, old news) supposed "outrage" to Obama's giving the commencement speech at Notre Dame.

He interviewed Jim Nicholson, former U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See. Hannity was overjoyed when Nicholson stated that Obama has attempted to offend Catholics at every turn - "He's done nothing but to stick it in their eye!" Then Nicholson really endeared himself to Hannity by quoting Chicago's Cardinal George in saying that Obama "has been an onslaught" to Catholicism!

Hannity agreed with Nicholson at every turn, adding "Catholicism and Christianity can be the one religion you can bash day in and day out."

Hey, Sean, the "bashed" title holder is, was and forever will be George W. Bush. Don't sell out your own kind!

The two lovers then bemoaned the Freedom of Conscience Act, pro-choice, and everything else considered against "morality."

Quite ironic: Nicholson expounded on Catholcism as if the enitre group of 70 million Catholics now hated Obama's guts because he is against Catholic doctrines. A 2007 PEW Research study on religion and pro-life issues, however, paints a different picture:

White Catholics also have inconsistent attitudes on life issues. Roughly four-in-ten take a pro-life stance on abortion (43%) and in opposing physicians being permitted to help dying patients to end their lives (42%). Just three-in-ten white Catholics (29%) say it is more important to avoid destroying the potential life of human embryos in stem cell research than to conduct research that may result in new medical cures. And about the same number (27%) oppose the death penalty.

And the real Catholic stance on birth control? Talk about differing with the pope on docrine! The following statement by a Chicago Tribune journalist is most aptly written:

Beyond the specific case of the Notre Dame commencement, Cardinal George's position continues a worrisome pattern in which the Catholic hierarchy in America is mixing religion with politics. It has seemingly lost sight of the difference between a moral nation and a religious one.

Nicholson let something slip, however: Obama "...created a lot of excitement being the first African American to become president."

Yes, I'm thinking that. I was raised VERY Catholic myself - just outside of Chicago - in the 1950s and 60s. I'm ashamed to say that being Catholic was synonymous with being racist: whenever suburban parish pastors preached "tolerance" or "diversity" their parish donations suffered. So they stopped.

Maybe Notre Dame's invitation to Obama has something to do with THAT bit of morality.

Yesterday, Bill O’Reilly defended his top henchman, producer Jesse Watters, who is supposedly “the subject of far-left angst, because he goes out and talks to the bad guys.” During his conversation with Amanda Carpenter of the Washington Times — who agreed with everything the Fox News host was saying — O’Reilly defended his “ambush journalism” as a “legitimate brand of journalism.”

Quiz yourself, Bill: How many of the "Ten Commandments" of journalism do you really ascribe to? According to The Elements of Journalism, a book by Bill Kovach and Tom Rosenstiel:

1. Journalism's first obligation is to the truth.
   
2. Its first loyalty is to the citizens.
3. Its essence is discipline of verification.
4. Its practitioners must maintain an independence from those they cover.
5. It must serve as an independent monitor of power.
6. It must provide a forum for public criticism and compromise.
7. It must strive to make the significant interesting, and relevant.
8. It must keep the news comprehensive and proportional.
9. Its practitioners must be allowed to exercise their personal conscience.

Now Bill, there are, as you know, different kinds (styles) of journalism: Sports, Science, Investigative, Yellow, Gonzo, Celebrity, Convergence and, your own, Ambush journalism. Of all kinds of journalism, Ambush journalism has been criticized by "legitimate" journalists as the most sensational and unethical. Many would not consider it journalism at all because of its blatant physical intrusion on a person.

You said "...goes out and talks to the bad guys." So you prejudge them as bad guys BEFORE you send Jesse Watters out to ambush them. And when they resist Watters (who is usually on their property), they look even worse, right? Very interesting.

WHY ARE ACTORS SUCH FREQUENT TARGETS OF "THE FACTOR"?

O'Reilly: My job is to watch the powerful. A performer has a forum that other people do not, and all we ask is that they be fair. If they believe something and use their TV show, movie or concert to spout off about it, that's fine. But if we have some questions about their beliefs, I think they should answer them -- and not be drive-by people.

Hmmm. Okay. But Bill, would that have included Princess Diana? Maybe she wasn't a performer, but she was one of the powerful you talk about. Would you have been in the car with the paparazzi if you had the chance?

HOW ABOUT CNN, YOUR FAVORITE COMPETITOR?

O'Reilly: I think Wolf Blitzer does a nice job, and Anderson Cooper is an honest guy.

But Bill, how would YOU know if Anderson Cooper is honest? Can you actually relate to a journalist who has won countless awards for his reporting on Katrina, Darfur, Ruwanda, the Asian Tsunami, Iraq and Bosnia?

And what does honesty have to do with "The O'Reilly Factor" on Fox? Fox, of all places! The home of Sean Hannity? Fox, the place where no liberal dares to tread! Fox, the only news channel that panders slavishly to Sarah Palin and let's her do all the talking! Fox News, who actually thinks of Michelle Malkin as a kind of roving reporter! Come on, Bill.

Be realistic and honest, Bill. "The O'Reilly Factor" and its ambush style does not equal any kind of honest journalism. Scrap people like Malkin and Watters, dump the attacks on the people you think are "the bad guys," say "mea cupla" one hundred thousand times and maybe you'll enter the realm of real journalism.

Just a thought.

Ann Coulter(geist) Bites A Big One

Now We Know Who Ann Coulter Gets Her News From: Michelle Malkin! ?? !!!!!

By now, this story has captured the hearts of the all the progressive bloggers in the world, and I'm no exception.

O.K., April Fool's pranks can be treacherous - and down right humiliating - especially to someone like Ann Coulter.

As an April Fool’s joke, Car and Driver magazine posted a made-up story on its website claiming that “President Obama had ordered Chevrolet and Dodge out of NASCAR after the 2009 season.” The magazine “pulled the fake story” after it “turned into a sizzling Internet topic,” especially on anti-Obama right-wing websites.

Rush Limbaugh laughed at the gullibility of anyone who would believe the article:

Well, now, who’s going to believe this?

Well, that’s not the quite proper way to ask it. All good comedy requires an element of truth in it, and obviously there are people that believe this could come down the pike. But it hasn’t yet. Run this story tomorrow, if you want to play a practical joke on people.

But some people DID believe it. Ann Coulter is as gullible as she is rabid for any anti-Obama news:

If Obama can tell GM and Chrysler that their participation in NASCAR is an “unnecessary expenditure,” isn’t having public schools force students to follow Muslim rituals, recite Islamic prayers and plan “jihads” also an “unnecessary expenditure”? Are all those school condom purchases considered “necessary expenditures”?.*

And guess where she got the "force students to follow Muslim rituals", etc." Not from a reliable source, that's for sure: Michelle Malkin's June, 2007 post Hot Topic: Muslim Prayer in Public Schools. Malkin is the reigning queen of yellow "journalism." Every time she's put in as a "reporter" on Fox News (esp. Bill O'Reilly's "Factor"), she's never calm, cool or collected. She rants. She rales. She fumes. She screams as if someone is raping her (while SHE rapes the English language!)

And she gets most of her facts wrong. Or spins a story until it becomes the opposite of what it was before. With professional news reporting, the story about San Diego's Carver school is limited to ONE school. Carver. Singular. The circumstances were approved by the principal and teachers and it would have gone unnoticed if a Christofascist substitute teacher hadn't screamed to the press that "indocrination" was going on.

From The San Diego Tribune:

"An investigation by the San Diego Unified School District failed to substantiate the allegations."

Of course, none of that matters to people as hungry for hate as Malkin and Coulter. And the irony in all of this: one of Coulter's books was titled If Democrats Had Any Brains, They'd Be Republicans.

Let's see: Ann Coulter - Michelle Malkin - Rush Limbaugh - Michael Steele - Bill O'Reilly - Sean Hannity - Sarah Palin - Bobby Jindal

Cheney's Got A MOLE!

No, Not THAT kind...
THIS kind:

Poor Dick Cheney. Nobody loves him! Maybe that's what's so attractive about him - to the media at least. His permanent sneer, his love of torture, his quest for more power than God. And now this:

HERSH: I’ll make it worse. I think he’s put people left. He’s put people back. They call it a stay behind. It’s sort of an intelligence term of art. When you leave a country and, you know, you’ve driven out the, you know, you’ve lost the war. You leave people behind. It’s a stay behind that you can continue to contacts with, to do sabotage, whatever you want to do. Cheney’s left a stay behind. He’s got people in a lot of agencies that still tell him what’s going on. Particularly in defense, obviously. Also in the NSA, there’s still people that talk to him. He still knows what’s going on. Can he still control policy up to a point? Probably up to a point, a minor point. But he’s still there. He’s still a presence.

With all due respect to Seymour Hersch, if you've got THAT many contacts in government, there is no such thing as a "minor point." You control policy - a lot.

So how many "friends" can Cheney count on if he decides to stage a "coup"?

Let's look at where he's been:

Of all those positions, Cheney showed his true self as Deputy Assistant. It was in this position that he suggested to Donald Rumsfeld a questionable policy of vengeance against journalists, especially Seymour Hirsch of the New York Times.

So, if we are to make anything of Cheney's stay-behinds, how powerful a conspiracy are we talking about?

Depends on how ruthless you think Dick Cheney really is.

*During Cheney's tenure, Halliburton changed its accounting practices regarding revenue realization of disputed costs on major construction projects. Cheney resigned as CEO of Halliburton on July 25, 2000. As vice president, he argued that this step removed any conflict of interest.
