She will force her views on people simply because of her position, she will take orders from Christofascists from all over the country because they are "men of God" and, even without her, they will taut their influence and repeat the "We are a Christian nation!!" mantra. If she acts in any way contrary to their views, if she doesn't take immediate action on her promises concerning abortion and gay rights, they will be vocal about how "disappointed" they are in her. She will be bombarded with requests for meetings from people like Graham, Perkins, Dobson, Robertson, Parsley, Hagee, Falwell (Jonathan), Gary Bauer. And she will be forever reminded that THEY put her in power.
Possibly the most influential "spiritual adviser" of her life is Rev. Ed Kalnins of an Assemblies of God Church in Wasilla. The small clip of an interview with him, actually reveals a lot. He agrees that Creationism (not Intelligent Design) should be taught in schools because students should know the "Facts of Creationism." Huh? Facts are based on solid proof - OTHER than the Bible.
On homosexuality, he's oh so caring and open: "It's a CHOICE. It's a lifestyle according to the Scriptures." ??? First of all, the Bible NEVER mentions homosexuality as we know it today and it NEVER mentions anything remorely close to a "lifestyle". When asked what he would do if he knew one of his flock were gay, he backs off with this lame line: "I dont' know who comes into the church." Followed by, "But I LOVE them! They're awesome!" "I do not accept this 'hate' thing."Right.Huffington Post 9/7:But Pastor Kalnins has also preached that critics of President Bush will be banished to hell; questioned whether people who voted for Sen. John Kerry in 2004 would be accepted to heaven; charged that the 9/11 terrorist attacks and war in Iraq were part of a war "contending for your faith;" and said that Jesus "operated from that position of war mode."
"War mode." Was Jesus a kind of super-computer? This guy's leaning dangerously towards Parsley-speak.
Months after hinting at possible damnation for Kerry supporters, Kalnins bristled at the treatment President Bush was receiving over the federal government's handling of Hurricane Katrina. "I hate criticisms towards the President," he said, "because it's like criticisms towards the pastor -- it's almost like, it's not going to get you anywhere, you know, except for hell. That's what it'll get you."
I believe that Jesus himself operated from that position of war mode. Everyone say "war mode." Now you say, wait a minute Ed, he's like the good shepherd, he's loving all the time and he's kind all the time. Oh yes he is -- but I also believe that he had a part of his thoughts that knew that he was in a war.
He preaches repeatedly about the "end times" or "last days," an apocalyptic prophesy held by a small but vocal group of Christian leaders. During his appearance with Palin in June, he declared, "I believe Alaska is one of the refuge states in the last days, and hundreds of thousands of people are going to come to the state to seek refuge and the church has to be ready to minister to them."
But Rev. Larry Kroon says that the will BE NO ALASKA or AMERICA. Can't these guys agree on anything?
Of course, in all this, Palin hasn't been really pressed about her views and how she would apply them, but with TWO Christofascist pastors, it's not hard to see where she'll be going (and quoting) during the Vice Presidential Debate.
One thing Alec Baldwin said today, resonates with me: "McCain isn't the next Bush. Palin is." If that's true and they get elected, we're headed towards a very rough (but entertaining) four years.
