Unabashed Hatred From The Republican Party Has Been Condensed...

Into One Very Ignorant House Representative
(And it's NOT Michele Bachmann for a change!)

As if the Republican Party doesn't have enough troubles with a spectacular defection to the enemy (Sen. Arlen Spector) and a babbling RNC chairman (Michael Steele), one of their most loyal and right-as-right-can-be House Representatives, Virginia Foxx (R-NC, Winston-Salem) has become a standard-bearer for the Matthew Shepherd Hates Crimes Act.

She just doesn't know it yet.
"I also would like to point out that there was a bill -- the hate crimes bill that's called the Matthew Shepard bill is named after a very unfortunate incident that happened where a young man was killed, but we know that that young man was killed in the commitment of a robbery. It wasn't because he was gay. This -- the bill was named for him, hate crimes bill was named for him, but it's really a hoax that that continues to be used as an excuse for passing these bills."
Matthew Shepherd's mother was in the gallery.

Keith Olbermann has, predictably, named Foxx "Worst Person In The World." He also said a lot of very scornful things himself, simply because Foxx very stupidly buys into the right-wing "hoax" theory. At one point, he intimated that Foxx was lying in her "hoax" statement.

Rep. Virginia Foxx's speech will soon become (if it hasn't already) "viral". People will request (STRONGLY) that she apologize to Matthew's mother. She probably won't, making herself and the Republican Party the primary reason the bill should be passed. People will envision her as torturing Shepherd herself.

Huffington Post:
The New York Times reported in 1998: "According to the local police and prosecutors, the two men lured Mr. Shepard out of a bar by saying they were gay. Then, the Laramie police say, the pair kidnapped Mr. Shepard, pistol-whipped him with a .357 Magnum, and left him tied to a ranch fence for 18 hours until a passing bicyclist spotted Mr. Shepard, who was unconscious."
This incident on the House floor will also bring to the fore some of Foxx's actions, in particular, her ignoring a mother's pleas concerning the death of her son in Iraq. (See the video below)

Other statements of opposition to the Matthew Shepherd Act:

REP MICHELE BACHMANN (R-MN): I feel that this hate crime legislation could be considered the very definition of tyranny.

REP. GRESHMAN BARRET (R-SC): This bill would inhibit religious freedom in our society -- a scary thought.

REP. LOUIE GOHMERT (R-TX): You think a pregnant mother does not deserve the protection of a homosexual? You think a military member doesn't deserve the protection of a transvestite?

REP. STEVE KING (R-IA): I, Mr. Speaker, oppose and I defy the logic of the people that would advocate for such legislation the very idea we could divine what goes on in the heads of people when they commit crimes.

And, of Course, Tony Perkins of Family Research Council just had to send out a donation request:

Hate Crimes legislation to silence you!
April 17, 2009

The enactment of so-called "hate crimes" legislation is a long stated objective of the homosexual agenda.

What "hate crimes" legislation does is lay the legal foundation and framework for investigating, prosecuting and persecuting pastors, business owners, and anyone else whose actions reflect their faith.

...The act would establish a new FEDERAL offense for so-called "hate crimes" and add "sexual orientation" and "gender identity" as protected classes. It will mandate a separate federal criminal prosecution for state offenses.

Adding "sexual orientation" to thought crimes legislation gives one set of crime victims a higher level of protection than it gives to people like you and me.

Tony Perkins: the old "thought crimes" meme became the stuff of urban legends a while ago, with pastors being carried bodily from their pulpits, whole hospitals shut down, and gold-chained crucifixes yanked off the tender necks of children!

I wonder if "Christians" had been added to the Act, how people like Perkins would react. Would he cut off his own nose to spite his face? I doubt it. He'd applaud the legislation or, at the very least, say nothing.

Such are the ways of hypocrits.

Just a thought.

The Schizophrenia of Americans About Torture: Hate It/Love It/Hate It/Love It

There are those who think waterboarding is torture (71%) but there are also some Americans who think it's justified (32%). Somewhere in those two numbers are hidden more sadists than we care to admit.

And while an overwhelming number think waterboarding is torture, only a third of the Americans polled care about accountability. Maybe it's a "dirty linen" mentality: our image is bad enough. Dwelling on what made it so bad will only make it worse. I, however, can think of a very good reason why there should be investigative hearings and (perhaps) convictions: closure.

That's it. We can't just walk away from a dark part of our history. We can't leave questions unanswered. We must know who gave the green light to torture, knowing full well that it was illegal. We must know who thought so little of America's conscience as to advocate torture.

Sure we know people who openly approve of (as Sean Hannity put it) "enhanced interrogation techniques." But if there were elected officials, appointed officials, who secretly promoted torture knowing that the American public would not approve of it, then they governed fraudulently and must be brought to justice.

It takes a good nation to say "we were wrong." It takes a GREAT nation to hold its own as accountable.

FOX: "Obama's Not Worth It! But Murdoch's Minions Are!!"

When Uncle Rupert Says "NO!" HE MEANS IT!!!

"The Fox Broadcasting Company will not air the Presidential News Conference," Fox said in a statement. "Fox's sister networks, Fox News Channel and the Fox Business Network, will air the press conference in its entirety.
FOX's animosity towards President Obama is developing into an all out war. Pity that only one side seems to be fighting. And while it wants to look like Sir Lancelot, it looks more like Don Quixote. Its hatred for all things Obama has actually become measurable:

From Pew Research Forum:

In the latest Pew Research Poll, FOX News tops all networks by a huge margin as being too critical of the president.

When Americans are asked to assess television news coverage of Barack Obama, Fox News Channel stands out from other networks for being too critical of the president. Nearly three-in-ten (29%) select Fox when asked which of six broadcast and cable news networks have been too critical of the new Democratic president, a far greater share than any other network. In contrast, no one TV network is singled out for being too easy on Obama.

FOX and the rest of Murdoch's Minions slant far enough to the right that, FRC's Tony Perkins counts himself as chief bootlicker: today he instilled terror into the hearts of Family Values audiences. He (and Murdoch) thinks that Congress might reinstate the "Fairness Doctrine," forcing radio and TV to air detested liberals and their horrible ideas.

FRC Action and America

face a two-pronged assault on our freedom of speech.

Will the newly empowered congressional liberals launch a direct legislative assault on religious and conservative broadcasters through the so-called "Fairness Doctrine"?

Or instead, will the Left execute their attack behind closed doors, through the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) using a tactic called "Balanced Community Broadcast Standards" that would force political and religious content to be "balanced" city by city?

Perkins' assumptions:

  • Radio stations would be FORCED to give time to what they consider "controversial" issues.
  • Christian broadcasters would be forced to give equal time to NON-Christians.
  • Stations would be FORCED to stop "conservative issue" programming and replace it with less controversial subject matter.
And I LOVE this one - the assclown gaff of the year:

And the liberal media (which the government would define as always "fair" and "balanced") would strengthen their grip on what you can-and cannot-hear.

Ahem, Tony, "Fair and Balanced" is the Fox logo. Perkins thinks he is a master of inciting fear and hatred of "them." The concerns stated above have no basis in fact. None.

from wikipedia:

In the current Congress, some members have introduced the Broadcaster Freedom Act of 2009 (S. 34), to block reinstatement of the Doctrine. On February 26, 2009, by a vote of 87-11, the Senate added that act as an amendment to a bill to give the District of Columbia a voting representative in the House.
The Associated Press reported that the vote was: “ In part a response to conservative radio talk show hosts who feared that Democrats would try to revive the policy to ensure liberal opinions got equal time. ”

The AP report went on to say that President Obama had no intention of reimposing the doctrine...
For a good laugh, watch how Sean Hannity and Fox News tell people that you're more "informed" if you watch Fox. (Inference: voters for Obama were dumber.) The other half of the screen is John Ziegler, a long time opponent of Barack Obama and Democrats who thinks that coverage of the presidential campaign was edited in Obama's favor.

A Vote For Sean Hannity's Waterboarding Is A Vote For Truth, Justice and the American Way!!

And Because He Thinks He's Superman!

A week ago, Sean Hannity of Fox News agreed to do something no intelligent broadcaster would do: after touting torture as simply an "interrogation method," he agreed to guest Charles Grodin's challenge to subject himself to waterboarding, volunteering to do it for charity.

Thank God for Keith Olbermann! Calling Hannity's bluff, Olbermann declared that he would give $1,000 to charity for every second Hannity withstood waterboarding.

The world is waiting, but so far, there has been no response from the Hannity camp.

From PoliticusUSA.com:

Malcolm Nance, a former master instructor at chief of training at the U.S. Navy Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape School (SERE) in San Diego described waterboarding in detail in 2007, “In the media, waterboarding is called "simulated drowning," but that's a misnomer. It does not simulate drowning, as the lungs are actually filling with water. There is no way to simulate that. The victim is drowning."

He continued, “Unless you have been strapped down to the board, have endured the agonizing feeling of the water overpowering your gag reflex, and then feel your throat open and allow pint after pint of water to involuntarily fill your lungs, you will not know the meaning of the word. "

Eleventh Commandment: "Thou Shalt Not Tamper With Your Wikipedia Profile!"

In Other Words: Don't Fuck With The Truth!
(With an Update about his "Susan Boyle" Speech)

Let this post be a Rick Warren Primer with several rules to remember:

1. Reinventing yourself is something only a true artist can pull off successfully.
2. Once you've stated something in public, you'd better have a good reason to state the opposite in public.
3. Only people with good self-esteem can lie well enough to be believed.

4. If, by lying, you're trying to straddle a wooden fence, get ready to get chafed in the balls.

5. If the fence you're straddling is a picket or has curled razor wire - you're an idiot.

Rick Warren is an idiot and by far the worst person to attempt reinvention. If, say, Madonna is a "10,"
then Warren is definitely a "-10." He's gone from shiny round face to rotund hipster with mustache, goatee and Hawaiian shirts. Now he's back to sport coats and (sometimes) shirt and tie. His church has gone from a series of big tents to a 120 acre "campus" complete with cafes, skateboard park and hundreds of monitors outside the "worship center," which, by the way, looks like an enormous basement liberally slathered with innocuous cream-colored paint. His book, The Purpose Driven Life spiraled to the top of the Bestseller lists and gained him much fame and even more fortune.

His call to the ministry was supposedly (according to wikipedia) initiated by a laying on of hands by W.A. Criswell, the arch-conservative Southern Baptist pastor of Dallas' First Baptist Church and former president of the Southern Baptist Convention. Criswell was influential in making the SBC MORE conservative than it had been in the 40s and 50s. And with Warren, Criswell espoused "Whatever it takes" more than "Thou shalt not lie."

By now everyone in the world with an internet connection knows about Warren's sanctified chicanery: He compared homosexuality in the same category as bestiality and pedophilia, then he said he never said it. His website stated that practicing homosexuals could not be a member of Saddleback Church. When someone pointed to that part of the site, it was expunged.

He persistently claims that he has many "gay friends" and knows "gay leaders" yet no LGBT community person has come forth in admitting that he or she has even spoken to Warren. Search the Saddleback website and you will be hardpressed to find out what Saddleback believes about homosexuality. Visit the HIV/AIDS part of the site HERE and note that homosexuality is not mentioned at all! Also in regards to AIDS/HIV: while he is considered the undisputed champion of AIDS relief, his projects are in AFRICA, not America (go to his site and you will find out how to minister to - supposedly - straight HIV+ people, but you will not find names, addresses or contacts of any kind). Warren's wife, Kay, runs the "international" AIDS initiatives in Africa and while you will read of the "stigma" attached to AIDS, not one word will be mentioned about homosexuality.

In the section, "Bible Questions and Answers" all answers are on an audio software that was useless to me. And while putting it in audio form may be wonderful for the blind, it is not so great for the deaf. One convenient thing about the audio: while it might site chapter and verse, it doesn't have to tell you which VERSION is used. Last year, the site's written answer for "What does the Bible say about homosexuality?" quoted three different sources/versions. With audio, the listener will make the assumption that all chapter and verse will be from the same source.
While the HIV/AIDS page tauts needle exchange and condom use as prevention, all of the money and sources channeled to Africa are given to programs preaching abstinence only and denounce needle exchange programs. (NOTE ON AFRICA: Warren's influential relationships with Rwanda and Uganda's presidents have beggared the question as to why he has not guided them towards decriminalizing homosexuality).

Warren made a last-minute video (supposedly for his congregation ONLY?!?) endorsing California's Proposition 8, then said on Larry King's national television program that he never campaigned for Prop 8.
To clarify his about-face concerning gay marriage, a press release was given out (the usual "one man, one woman for 5000 years, EVERY culture, EVERY religion" gibberish), but it did little to explain anything.

The much-anticipated appearance of Warren on George Stephanopoulos' Washington program, This Week, was cancelled at the VERY last minute, again giving lame excuses and even blaming his strained vocal chords on Fox News' insistence that his pulpit be varnished, thus forcing him to inhale fumes for hours.

The latest news is that there's been some strange goings on concerning Rick Warren's page on wikipedia.org. The site's been "frozen" for some time because rewording and restructuring has been going on without the proper sources. After scrutiny, the revisionist was discovered to be one Mark Carver, an advisor to Warren, heading what has now become known as WWW: "Warren Wikipedia Whitewashers." From The Ignorant Heterosexual:
Among the contentions made by the Warren Wikipedia Whitewashers: - Warren did not compare same sex marriage to incest, polygamy and pedophilia during his notorious Beliefnet interview. - Gay and lesbian people have never had the right to marry in California. - Controversies surrounding Warren's position on gay marriage are, according to CarverM, "a tempest in a teapot" and unworthy of more discussion than a link to Wikipedia's Proposition 8 page. After weeks of voluminous and sometimes heated debate, it was uncovered that CarverM is in fact Mark Carver, the International Director of Purpose Driven Ministries.
UPDATE AS OF 4/27:

Warren just used the inspirational Susan Boyle story in a speech (see below). He includes the footage we've all seen in his presentation, depending upon it, leaning upon it like a crutch to get his point across. His primary message is that we are all wonderful and loved by God no matter what our appearances may be. How beautiful! How insightful! How meaningful!

How...much more of this can we take? Where's the meme "It's not about YOU!" Warren talks about how so many of us have been brainwashed to prejudge people by the way they look or their circumstances. This is a guy who put being gay in the same class of sin as being a pedophile! This is a guy who can't backpedal enough when criticized for his homophobia. This is a guy who thinks image is SO important that he renamed his own church: it USED to be the "Saddleback Southern Baptist Church." This is a guy who will always let others emphasize his importance in the welfare of African nations, but would be hard-pressed to outline his church's local AIDS outreach.

Warren, his wife, Kay, and their staff have come off this past year as a bunch of Christofascist proselytizers without much sense at all: when their lies are discovered, their spins and explanations are absurd. That they've gotten this far regarding America's emotions and souls is very disturbing.

Be afraid. The next Christofascist preacher might be a better liar.

Just a thought.

"Bring On The Waterboarders!": Is Cheney's Defense a Very Stupid OFFENSE?

'Cause That's What It Looks Like To The Rest of Us!

Rachel Maddow is right on top of it: Cheney now seems to be prepping for a defense. Shades of "Judgment at Nuremburg." The problem for Cheney is he can't use the excuse of the Nuremburg defendants - "I was just following orders"- simply because he was the one who probably GAVE the orders.

Three reasons why Dick Cheney is stupid:

1. He should have shut up and faded away like any good former vice-president. He hates President Obama and his only stance is "He's soft on terrorists." Stupid. Very stupid.

2. He very obviously defends the use of torture.

3. The papers he requested may prove to be irrelevent to the case, but the TIMES they were written are certainly no coincidence. Does his arrogance block out all the facts surrounding his case? Who knows? Has one of his minions managed to destroy key evidence?

Thanks to the New York Times, you can link up with 24 of the torture memos and read what all the fuss is about. Or, you can click on one of the links below to get the exact memo you want. Anyway, there's nothing like sitting beside your little child's bed and reading them a lovely torture memo!

2002

JAN. 25 Alberto R. Gonzales,
Gonzales's Memo to Bush (PDF document)

JAN. 26 Colin Powell

Powell's Memo to White House (PDF document)

FEB. 2 William H. Taft IV,

AUGUST Jay S. Bybee

2003

MARCH A memorandum prepared by a Defense Department legal task force drew on the January and August memorandums to declare that President Bush was not bound by either an international treaty prohibiting torture or by a federal anti-torture law because he had the authority as commander in chief to approve any technique needed to protect the nation's security.

APRIL Donald Rumsfeld

Rumsfeld's Memo on Interrogation Techniques (PDF document)

And as we all know, as with roads and Rome, all these memos lead to Dick Cheney.

You know he'll never cop a Truman and say "the buck stops here."

The segment of video from Rachel Maddow's show is rather long (12 min) but worth the listening/viewing power.

Torture: WWBD? (What Would Benedict Do?)

'Tis a coincidence: that the spiritual leader of the world's largest Christian Church could trace part of his ecclesiastical heritage back to Roman Catholicism's darkest sin: The Inquisition. And today, during a time of deep inner reflection upon the subject of torture, the Catholic Church is presided over by one Benedict XVI, for at the time of his election as Pope, Benedict had been Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. The CDF is the child of the INQUISITION:

(From wikipedia)
A form of torture similar to waterboarding called toca, and more recently "Spanish water torture", to differentiate it from the better known Chinese water torture, along with garrucha (or strappado) and the most frequently used potro (or the rack), was used infrequently during the trial portion of the Spanish Inquisition process. "The toca, also called tortura del agua, consisted of introducing a cloth into the mouth of the victim, and forcing them to ingest water spilled from a jar so that they had the impression of drowning". Wlliam Schweiker claims that the use of water as a form of torture also had profound religious significance to the Inquisitors.

A strange man, Benedict XVI: forced to be Hitler Youth, then an infantry man during WWII, he palled around with the likes of Hans Kung, a liberal colleague and both closely associated with the ideals of Vatican II. But, as they say, "something changed," and he started listing to the right, concentrating on the "traditional" church and resisting any change.

wikipedia:
Like his predecessor, Benedict XVI maintains the traditional Catholic doctrines on artificial birth control, abortion and homosexuality.
In addition to his native German, Benedict XVI fluently speaks Italian, French, English, Latin, and also has a knowledge of Portuguese. He can read Ancient Greek and biblical Hebrew.

Strange: knowledge of "Ancient Greek and biblical Hebrew" has been the undoing of card-carrying Fundamentalist and Evangelical "scholars" because it is in reading the Bible in its nearest (and "purist") form of translation that a person realizes that what may actually have happened and what was written are two very different things: unless God purposely inspired errors and inconsistencies. Benedict would have noticed that "homosexuality" as we know it today, was NOT in the Bible's lexicon, and that the Greek word "arsenakatoi" (sometimes translated as "sodomite") was a fairly obscure Greek-Hebrew portmanteau slang word for "temple prostitutes."

But enough of the etymology of sodomy, let's focus on The Church and "torture." According to sources, the Catholic Church did not stop torture as a by-product of The Inquisition until the 19th century. So torture was recognized as a means of gaining information (or a recanting of beliefs) for over 700 years. Of course modern day popes decry torture and err on the side of the humane treatment of prisoners. BUT the gradual involvement of the Church in American politics casts doubt upon the depth and sincerity of this ideology.

Benedict XVI has caused consternation amidst the Muslim world with his rhetoric about Islam and Mohammed. If he were to decide the efficacy of torture against a Al Qaeda or Taliban terrorist, would he give thumbs up...or down?

Just a thought.

Now... (as Andrew Sullivan would put it) a mental health break:

The Last Nail in the Bush Administration's Coffin: Waterboarding WAS Torture.

And It Proudly Held The Cheney Seal Of Approval!
(His fingerprints must have been all over the memos!)

For those who have lived in a cave for the past weeks, the subject yesterday, today and tomorrow has been, is and will be: waterboarding.

From wikipedia - Effects of Waterboarding:
The technique does not inevitably cause lasting physical damage. It can cause extreme pain, dry drowning, damage to lungs, brain damage from oxygen deprivation, other physical injuries including broken bones due to struggling against restraints, lasting psychological damage or, ultimately, death. Adverse physical consequences can start manifesting months after the event; psychological effects can last for years.

From the 2005 Bradbury memo:

The CIA used the waterboard "at least 83 times during August 2002" in the interrogation of Zubaydah. IG Report at 90, and 183 times during March 2003 in the interrogation of KSM, see id. at 91.

Releasing previously classified memos is always a situation fraught with dangerous consequences. In the case of the "Torture memos" (as they're sure to become known) concerning torture of Al Qaeda detainees/suspects, their release has broken America into two main factions facing each other and screaming: "We torture!" "We do not torture!" But as each day goes by, the "We torture" side has gotten louder, while the dissenters' has gotten weaker. The memos, the testimonies - EVIDENCE - has come to the fore and it's all damaging: to the Bush Administration, to Dick Cheney in particular (as the foremost champion of torture), but most of all, to the The United States of America.

We will be labeled hypocrits - and rightly so. We will be called sinister and evil. But - worst of all - the world will laugh at us for impeaching a President who lied about getting a "Lewinsky" from an intern and not impeaching a President who said "We do not torture, " when we did. The amount of humiliation we will receive may become so great we may never recover from it. President Obama will have to make an urgent request to the nation along these lines: "Every citizen of the United States MUST at all times be a roving ambassador' of good will. If you cannot convince the world that we were deceived as much as everyone, we will never have ANY stature in the world!" There are so many people who's frustration took hold with Abu Ghraib and ascended to the heights of anger with these memos:

From: Pros Before Hos - Word of the Day:

What kind of fucking country do you live in where you have to debate whether torturing someone is a crime? What kind of country do you live in when you can spend 3 years prosecuting the President for a consensual sexual act but won’t prosecute a President for authorizing illegal wiretaps and torturing people? What kind of country do you live in where the supposed ’spiritual’ and ‘religious’ leaders think it’s OK to torture non-Christians?
In a previous post, I presented a picture of U.S. and Vietnamese troops waterboarding a Viet Cong soldier. Does it make waterboarding right? Let's look back a bit further in history.

From Crooks and Liars:
On November 29, 2007, Sen. McCain, while campaigning in St. Petersburg, Florida, said, "Following World War II war crime trials were convened. The Japanese were tried and convicted and hung for war crimes committed against American POWs. Among those charges for which they were convicted was waterboarding."
The problem we have now is: who do we hang?

Just a thought.

P.S.: Below is a little video clip of an interview with King Abdullah of Jordan (who might know a thing or two about torture)

Torture + Outed Florida Gov. + Salvation Army Child Molester + Masters and Johnson Fraud =

A Thoroughly Horrible, Atrocious,
Hidiously Rotten,No Good Day!

...For Right Winguts and Christofascists!

Ever had one of those days...? Well, April 23rd just didn't sit well with the Right Wingnuts (religious or otherwise). First, there was Rep. Boehner's slip of the lip: He used the dreaded T-word (gasp!):

From Crooks and Liars:

Regarding his use of the T-word, Boehner spokesman Michael Steel writes, "It is clear from the context that Boehner was simply using liberals' verbiage to describe these interrogation techniques. The United States does not torture."

Give this man a Rick Warren Cigar!

Then a movie called Outrage came out (pardon the pun) and has named names - Republican names - of closeted Republican gays.

From: Pam's House Blend:

LOLOLOLOLOLOL! Whoa, is anyone surprised at this? I haven't seen Outrage, but a lot of journalists took in a screening. The Florida governor and almost-ran wannabe McCain veep, who announced his engagement (to a woman) at a politically convenient time, would have to be at the top of any list to try to finally decloset him.

Other names: Former Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho), Rep. David Dreier (R-Calif.) and former Rep. Jim McCreary (R-La.) and Ken Mehlman, former chairman of the Republican Party. Fox anchor Shepard Smith is named, even though he is not a politician.

Today it was revealed that a Salvation Army youth pastor has been charged with child molestation:

(HT Dan Savage):
A Salvation Army youth pastor in Greenwood has been arrested on preliminary child-molestation charges involving three 15-year-old girls. Jonathan James Hartman, 29, Indianapolis, was arrested Tuesday... One of the girls told police that she is pregnant with Hartman's baby, the release stated.
I'll never look at another one of those bellringers at Christmastime in the same way again.

In the vein of "If the Bible says it's true, it is" comes a book which not only questions the dependable Masters & Johnson study, but intimates that fraud was involved:

(from 365gay.com)

The New York Times’ John Tierney reports on his blog today that a new book questions whether Masters & Johnson faked the conversion of gays and lesbians into happy heterosexuals. Ex-gay groups, like Exodous International, often use the Masters & Johnson study to say that the ability to turn gays into ex-gays has a scientific basis. Fail!

Then a double dose of torture angst came from Andrew Sullivan (the Atlantic):
Today the Dish learned that interrogators from both the FBI and CIA resisted torturing Zubaydah, and only did so because the White House sought to find an Iraq-Qaeda connection. Also, they used spiders. Churchill and even the Luftwaffe in wartime had higher moral standards than Cheney, whose incompetence eclipsed even his vanity.
So there you have it:
  • A Republican has to do damage control on his gaff about torture.
  • Two agencies of the federal government refused to torture but were commanded by the White House to do so.
  • A long-time "reliable source" of the ex-gay movement is given the axe.
  • A Salvation Army youth pastor is arrested for child molestation of two girls, one of whom may be pregnant with his child!
  • And a documentary "outing" Republicans creates a firestorm too formidable to be doused in the foreseeable future!
Will this "bad karma" day continue? As you're reading this, do you hear careers and ideologies crumbling? We can only hope. Now for a bit of a diversion, I found this YouTube piece about the state of today's Republican Party to be almost "inerrant." Enjoy!

Glenn Beck (ala Jan Brady): "That's All We Hear! Militia, Militia, Militia!"

Can D.C. Stand Even More Stupidity?

A...MILLION...MAN...MILITIA...MARCH. So much for debunking "bitter people who cling to their guns and religion."

From Historian Marc Pitcavage (courtesy, Wikipedia)
The militia movement is a right-wing movement that arose following controversial standoffs in the 1990s. It inherited paramilitary traditions of earlier groups, especially the conspiratorial, antigovernment Posse Comitatus. The militia movement claims that militia groups are sanctioned by law but uncontrolled by government; in fact, they are designed to oppose a tyrannical government. Adherents believe that behind the "tyranny" is a left-wing, globalist conspiracy known as the New World Order. The movement's ideology has led some adherents to commit criminal acts, including stockpiling illegal weapons and explosives and plotting to destroy buildings or assassinate public officials, as well as lesser confrontations.
As an outgrowth of the (unsuccessful) tea parties, people (all anonymous) are talking about a march on Washington composed of all those disgruntled people who see Barack Obama as the anti-Christ, talk about the coming terrors of The New World Order, think Hannity, Limbaugh and (possibly) O'Reilly are the only believable media people left, and feel Sarah Palin has a God-given right to shoot wolves from planes.

From Crooks and Liars:

"...the latest idea from the militiamen who are starting to see their paranoid ranks rising:

A peaceful demonstration of at least a million — hey, if we can 10 million, even better — but at least one million armed militia men marching on Washington. A peaceful demonstration. No shooting, no one gets hurt. Just a demonstration. The only difference from any typical demonstration is we will all be armed.

Throw in Christian Identity, the Ku Klux Klan, Neo-Nazis, Pastor Rod Parsley (for religious respectability), people who make pilgrimages to Ruby Ridge and Waco, and brother, you've got a kickass party!

Try getting a permit for this shindig! "No shooting, no one gets hurt." WTF? One million men (no women?) and one million guns loaded with about 8-10 million rounds of ammunition and no one gets hurt?

"Peaceful" Impossible. If one "wrong" tattoo shows up (perhaps Jonathan and David kissing) there will be way too much bloodshed.

And pointless. Except to Fox News, the sponsor of the event.

Just a thought.

Of Susan Boyles and Barack Obamas: Cheers and Jeers

It's All About Expectations

When Barack Obama took the political stage, a great many people cheered.
Now some people are jeering: loudly.

When Susan Boyle took the London stage for "Britain's Got Talent", a great many people jeered at her.
Now the entire world is cheering: loudly.

It's all about expectations: what we expect to see come out of people we truly do not know. With respect to President Obama, we needed change so much that when he told us he would make that change, well, we expected too much from one man. But the change is there. How do we know? You don't have to look any further than the people who were predisposed to hate him from the beginning. Any success agitated them. They hate him even more now. From Fox News to Rush Limbaugh, to Ann Coulter(geist), their media pick at errors as if a frantic dance. Some of them even collide. There is no choreographer. The dance is chaotic. They each want to dance the way they feel and there is no cohesiveness: can you see them sitting around a table to agree on policies? Palin. Gingrich. Jendal. Steele. The odds that they would produce anything would be worse than the odds of a hundred chimpanzees typing out all the works of Shakespeare.

American society is a very, very dichotomous: we expect legislators, judges and administrators to carry the weight of the world on their shoulders, but we are suspicious of intelligence. We put up with eight years of ineptitude and buffoonery, with world class stupidity even, but we are frightened of an administration that is perhaps the most intelligent diplomatic force we have seen in over half a century.

Obama's first 100 days is drawing to a close and people are drawing imaginary battle lines. But what he has had to face and the way he has faced it is extraordinary, especially for one man. Those who jeer him, however, will never be satisfied no matter how many times he reaches across the aisle to them. They hate him, because need to hate him. They have foolishly set up "tea parties" to oppose a stimulus package that was badly needed. Even economists say that the stimulus package is not just a bandaid, but an honest attempt at helping America's economic mess. George Bush deregulated everything he could, then in his last 100 days, deregulated everything that was placed on his desk (he may have, for all we know, deregulated the desk itself) He certainly didn't know WHAT he was deregulating, only that he was deregulating something, and that was enough.

So what, if at all, is the similarity between Barack Obama and Susan Boyle? Again, it's all about expectations. Both were prepared to be mocked. Susan Boyle experienced low expectations. Barack Obama experienced high expectations. Both had to OVERCOME those expectations. Both had to admit they could make mistakes.

A big difference between Boyle and Obama: Boyle won her contest, but Obama's contest is just beginning, with people "hoping he fails" all along the way.

Who's happier?

Just thought.

Postscript:

Susan Boyle reminds me of Britain's late Queen Mother: not a conventional beauty by any means, but at the end of her 101 turbulent and eventful years was one of the most beloved women in the world. If Susan continues to beguile people with her unique voice and quirkiness, she too can join the ranks of Queen Mum.

If Texas Secedes, It DESERVES Chuck Norris For President!

"Chuck Norris's tears cure cancer. Too bad he never cries. Ever."

And For Vice President...Pat Robertson!

Today we've got TWO super-duper right wingnnut stories to chew on (of course there's more, but these are the most ridiculous, so we couldn't resist!): Tea partying is old news, but the new stuff about what RESULTED from the parties is still on top; and now that the Obama administration has released DHS memos about what everyone already knew - that we stand as much chance being attacked by right wing extremists as from outside terrorists - every right wingnut is crawling out of the wood work to say "How DARE he!" That, of course, includes Pat Robertson (see video below!).

The first story shows just how desperate Republicans are getting these days. Granted, some Texans (especially the ones with roots in Crawford, Midland and even Dallas) are indelibly stupid. It may be something in the water. In the past (before Alaska) all Americans outside of Texas knew about the state was that it had bragging rights brought on by its size and its oil. Since then, it's been eclipsed by Alaska in size and by Saudi Arabia in oil production. So what does it have to brag about now? Education? (nah, it's 26th in the nation with lower than average reading scores - figures!*). The fact that Texans consume the most energy in the nation per capita? How about the fact that Texas leads the nation in executions (400 for the last 27 years)? Or possibly the most interesting fact: that Texas emits the most greenhouse gases in the US? Now Texas, it seems, is considering secession:
Gov. Rick Perry (R-TX) was one of the dozens of Republican lawmakers who are addressing the anti-Obama tea parties today. He told the crowd he didn’t believe they were all “right-wing extremists,” as others had sought to portray them. “But if you are, I’m with you!” he shouted. After, he told reporters that Texas might have to secede from the union: Perry told reporters following his speech that Texans might get so frustrated with the government they would want to secede from the union.
And a pronouncement from "the poor man's Arnold Schwarzeneger" Chuck Norris:
On Glenn Beck's radio show last week, I quipped in response to our wayward federal government, "I may run for president of Texas."

That need may be a reality sooner than we think. If not me, someone someday may again be running for president of the Lone Star state, if the state of the union continues to turn into the enemy of the state.

Story #2 involves the DHS memos released stating what we already knew: radical right-wing terrorists are a threat to the country just as much as Al Qaeda.

This, from U.S. News & World Report in Bush's 2005:

By Danielle Knight
Posted 7/12/05
In the 10 years since the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing killed 168 people, roughly 60 right-wing terrorist plots have been uncovered in the United States, according to an upcoming report by the Southern Poverty Law Center's Intelligence Project. The plots, all foiled by law enforcement, reportedly included violent plans by antigovernment militia groups, racist skinhead organizations, and Ku Klux Klan members to use various types of chemical bombs and other weapons.

Interestingly enough, Texas has a very high per capita hate group ranking. Washington D.C., has the highest: must be all the Republican lobbyists.

There are over 965 hate groups in the country. One of them is Pat Robertson.

From Crooks and Liars:

For the past few days, the right wing has been going after a new Department of Homeland Security (DHS) report warning that “rightwing extremists…may be gaining new recruits” because of Barack Obama’s election and the “economic downtown.”

ROBERTSON: It shows somebody down in the bowels of that organization is either a convinced left winger or somebody whose sexual orientation is somewhat in question.

But it’s that kind of thing, somebody who doesn’t think that we should have abortion on demand, is labeled a terrorist! It’s outrageous!

Crooks and Liars also points out that Robertson urged his viewers to “jam up” the homeland security phone lines by calling in to complain.

Telling people to purposely obstruct the operations of DHS might be considered treason, right?

Just a thought.

Texas ranked 26 in the American Legislative Exchange Council's Report Card on American Education. Texas students ranked higher than average in mathematics, but lower in reading. Between 2005–2006, Texas spent $7,584 per pupil ranking it below the national average of $9,295. The pupil/teacher ratio was 15.0, slightly below average. Texas paid instructors $38,130, below the national average. The state provided 89.22% of the funding for education, the federal government 10.8%.

A Call For Obama's Waterboarding: Tea Party or Palin Rally?

Bashobama At It's Best! (Or Worst?)!

From Think Progress.com:

Tea party organizers and participants have repeatedly insisted that their nationwide protests today are completely non-partisan and not meant to be anti-Obama. However, there didn’t seem to be any anti-Republican or anti-Bush signs at the protests. Instead, not only were there signs/clothing protest Obama’s policies, but some had violent or racist rhetoric. One participant even asked Joe the Plumber about waterboarding Obama!
Watch it (below)

One participant had a deprecatory sign "Homey don't do dat!" Showing how low Fox News has gone with it, Media Matters counted the ne'er-do-well's coverage of the tea parties:

From Think Progress:
...between April 6 and April 13; it aired at least 73 in-show and commercial promotions for the parties as well. Of all the Fox programs, Neil Cavuto’s “Your World” dedicated the most time to the tea parties.
Second runner-up was Sean Hannity with 2 segments, 10 in-show promotions and 3 commercials. Way to go Sean! Bet you got a kick out of the waterboarding comment too!

"Tea parties" have shown us the poor, poorer and poorest of our society in terms of open-mindedness. Fox News has shown us that they'll cater to those bigoted minds as much as possible.

Dobson, Hagee, Parsley, Warren and Perkins Go Back Into Their Cages

...For Now.

The First World War was supposed to be "The War to end all wars." Pity no one told the Germans, the Koreans, the Vietnamese, the Serbs, the Iraqis, most of the countries in Africa or George Bush. After WWI, an enormous sigh of relief gave way to an explosion of joy and good times, even decadence. Then in a period of little more than twenty years, we found out that our WORST enemy had to be faced: complacency.

The same kind of complacency that engulfed gays who came out in the late seventies and some feminists who rejoiced at Roe vs Wade. It was the kind of complacency that gave us a sense of invulnerability, a false hubris. And this lull in vigilance was what Christofascists in our country were waiting for: the Moral Majority had room to grow. Thus started the "culture war."

Steve Benen, Political Animal, Washington Monthly, April 14, 2009:
Anti-gay animus is not only waning, four states now allow gay marriage. Abortion is still legal and a majority of Americans are still pro-choice. School prayer isn't even on the political world's radar screen anymore. Pornography is not only a multi-billion industry; it's more accessible than ever. The single fastest growing segment of the American spiritual landscape is non-believers and those with no religious identification.

That's fine, but what we've still got on our hands is: Prop 8, DOMA, Don't Ask Don't Tell, state constitutional amendments prohibiting same-sex marriage, Focus on the Family, Rush Limbaugh, Family Research Council, the Mormon Church, the Vatican, Michelle Malkin, The Creation Museum, Bill O'Reilly, Fox News, Ann Coulter(geist), the NRA and hate groups breeding hate crimes in growing numbers.

When James Dobson delivered his parting speech to Focus On The Family, he wasn't abdicating nor was he waving a white flag of surrender. Not by a long shot.
"Humanly speaking, we can say that we have lost all those battles, but God is in control and we are not going to give up now, right? ... I have been assured by the board and by many of you that we're not going to cow, we're not going to be discouraged."
Christofascists may have lost some battles for America's souls, but still have the rest of the world's non-Christians to deal with. And they're making inroads in Africa, China and the Middle East. All Christian groups have to do is to scream "persecution" and money rolls in along with a particular kind of politics - religious politics. "AIDS in Africa? We'll help, just don't distribute condoms, and preach abstinence only." They're making inroads where Jerry Falwell failed.*

Yes, today's Christofascists are very much like caged animals. And they will do, as Rick Warren so often proscribes: "Whatever it takes."

*Along with food and clothing, during the Asian Tsunami catastrophe, Falwell tried to distribute 600,000 Christian tracts of scripture. The Muslims and Hindus pulled a Sarah Palin: "Thanks, but no thanks."

MORE TARNISH THAN VARNISH: Even Rick Warren's Pulpit Thinks He's A Liar!

MORE TARNISH THAN VARNISH?

Were the fumes from a freshly varnished pulpit to blame for Rick Warren's sudden no-show on George Stephanopoulos' This Week? Better yet, who came up with that lame idea for an excuse?

Maybe the pulpit got tired of hearing the totally erroneous "one man, one woman for 5,000 years..." bit. Maybe the pulpit realized what a front it's been for lies and half-truths.

Or maybe, just maybe, the pulpit finally saw that the real Rick Warren was covered over in particle board, "real wood veneer" and... varnish.

A persona is not necessarily truthful.
