It's True: Republicans Will Be Getting Even Poorer and Dumber Than They Are Now!

Republicans have lost an enormous amount of support among upscale voters, basically just breaking even among those with household incomes above $50,000 a year, a traditional GOP stronghold. Similarly, McCain's losing to Obama among college graduates and voters who have attended some college underscores how much the GOP franchise is in trouble. My hunch is that the Republican Party's focus on social, cultural, and religious issues -- most notably, fights over embryonic-stem-cell research and Terri Schiavo -- cost its candidates dearly among upscale voters.

When I was a kid, (don't ask) Republicans were thought of as, well, patrician. They were the professionals - doctors, lawyers, engineers - while the Democrats had unions and worked on assembly lines primarily because they lacked education. By reaching for the vote of Sarah Palin's "Joe Sixpack," they ignored their base and got stuck with Christofascists running the show for the RNC.

Now they're stuck with the kind of voters they once disdained. They're closer to Jeff Foxworthy's rednecks than they ever imagined. Soon, the list of jokes will be prefaced by "you might be a Republican if..." O.K., that's mean spirited of me and redneckphobic. But if Republicans don't recapture upscale voters - and quickly - they might find that their supporters are too wild and dogmatic to control.

And Ann Coulter's book - If Democrats Had Any Brains, They'd Be Republicans - will become an anomaly. Now THAT would be wonderful!

We won a great victory today in our lawsuit against the Imperial Klans of America (IKA) and its leader, Ron Edwards.

The jury awarded a $2.5 million verdict to our client, Jordan Gruver, who was brutally beaten by IKA members while attending a county fair in Brandenburg, Ky.

The people of Meade County, Kentucky, have spoken loudly and clearly. And what they've said is that ethnic violence has no place in our society, that those who promote hate and violence will be held accountable and made to pay a steep price.

But for some, the price isn't steep enough!

Surely Palin fed the crowds "clinging to their guns and their religion." But when you cling to your religion with murder in your heart, some of the blame for that extreme hatred lies with the "religion." Yesterday, we posted an article about a South Carolina Catholic priest who told parishioners that if they voted for Obama, they would have to do penance before taking Holy Communion. The attack against Obama was supposed to be because of his stance on abortion, but it was definitely tinged with racist overtones. And today, this from Associated Press:

One of the most popular white supremacist Web sites got more than 2,000 new members the day after the election, compared with 91 new members on Election Day, according to an AP count. The site, stormfront.org, was temporarily off-line Nov. 5 because of the overwhelming amount of activity it received after Election Day.

On Saturday, one Stormfront poster, identified as Dalderian Germanicus, of North Las Vegas, said, "I want the SOB laid out in a box to see how 'messiahs' come to rest. God has abandoned us, this country is doomed."

Note "God has abandoned us." Where did the poster get that idea from? He couldn't have come up with it himself.

George W. B**h is deregulating again - with a vengeance. Up to 90 deregulations affecting the nation could become policy before Barack Obama takes office:

The new rules would be among the most controversial deregulatory steps of the Bush era and could be difficult for his successor to undo. Some would ease or lift constraints on private industry, including power plants, mines and farms.

Those and other regulations would help clear obstacles to some commercial ocean-fishing activities, ease controls on emissions of pollutants that contribute to global warming, relax drinking-water standards and lift a key restriction on mountaintop coal mining.

In May, White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten vowed that the administration would propose no regulations after June 1. He and White House spokesman Tony Fratto have repeatedly stated their contempt for what they call “midnight regulations.”

O.K., Enough is enough already! We know how much B**h hates environmentalists, loves big business and war, and knows nothing about healthcare or education. He's brought this country down so much that it will take decades for us to get back on our feet. His war, his deregulation, his interrogation methods have all said a big FUCK YOU! to America, but he's a glutton: he'll get in his last digs even if they are the last things he'll ever do to this country (or IN this country: read below).

Why?!? Does he hate us so much that he would enact deregulations to ruin us? O.K., so we made fun of his gross stupidity and blocked his chances to create numerous satellite USAs. Deregulating everything in a hurry while the country is suffering from eight years of deregulation just doesn't make sense. O.K., you have a point: much of what B**h did never made any sense. Then it's vengeance pure and simple. Either that or he's getting a little under the table.

But for leaving the country in a shambles and then BULLDOZING it, he should get something: justice.

COLUMBIA, S.C. - A South Carolina Roman Catholic priest has told his parishioners that they should refrain from receiving Holy Communion if they voted for Barack Obama because the Democratic president-elect supports abortion, and supporting him "constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil."

The Rev. Jay Scott Newman said in a letter distributed Sunday to parishioners at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greenville that they are putting their souls at risk if they take Holy Communion before doing penance for their vote.

"Our nation has chosen for its chief executive the most radical pro-abortion politician ever to serve in the United States Senate or to run for president," Newman wrote, referring to Obama by his full name, including his middle name of Hussein.

As a recovering Catholic, I can tell you that NO ONE - no priest, no bishop, no pope - can ever, ever restrain you from receiving Holy Communion! There is something called "an act of contrition," which, if made sincerely before Communion, allows one to take Holy Communion. The only circumstance (to my knowledge) where you cannot receive communion is if you have been excommunicated by the church.

Using religion for political reasons (like the 1955 article above) is criminal. Clearly this priest couldn't tell his parish how to vote before the election, but decided to zap Obama supporters AFTER the election.

By his letter, Rev. Jay Scott You-Have-Sinned Newman revealed his loathing for Obama. Right-wing rednecks have been mentioning Obama's middle name as a slur against the President-elect (as well as Ann Coulter, but, then again, we all know that rednecks have better taste) Of course, I don't know which single-wide Newman crawled out from under, but his statement was against doctrine, abusive and too provocative: since South Carolina has one of the country's largest ratios of hate groups, it might have been expected from a preacher who matriculated at a store-front Bible school, but not a priest who (supposedly) received extensive education in both a college and a seminary. His screed is divisive and it is racist.

Make no mistake about it, folks, Padre Newman's a gunnin' for Obama!

Obama's Most Critical Diplomatic Challenge: Nov. 15

Diplomacy is like tightrope walking without a net - and no weights. Impartiality is too ephemeral. Diplomats are statesman who know that there are only two possible ends to diplomacy: peace or war. On Nov. 15th (this Saturday) a grassroots effort will be taking place and, because it first started out "viral", it may become global.

At first glance, it is the protest of the passage of California's Proposition 8. It should be a statewide protest.

It won't be.

It should be, at most, a nationwide protest.

It might not be.
Similar propositions have made it through state constitutions without this much fuss. So why now? Simple: it's California. If any state of the Union should have marriage equality, California would be the natural first choice. Instead, Massachusetts and Connecticut have forged the way. Many people see the votes for Prop 8 as votes for hate; hate against a state that houses some of the most compassionate and liberal entities: like San Francisco. The campaign to push through Prop 8 was not a "defense" of marriage but an overt attack against a certain group of people, making them second-class citizens. Prop 8 supporters looked like a group of steamrollers ready to crush anything in their path.

On Saturday, physical conflict may be inevitable. So the question is: how will president-elect Barack Obama react on Saturday? Will he choose to react at all? Will he act diplomatically? Or will he antagonize citizens on both sides? One side is already girding their loins for a war against the dreaded LIBERALS!:

Dear President-Elect Obama: we're sorry that you're hit with a social crises before you even take office. But if you can resolve this battle in our own culture war, you will be lionized as a genius of statesmanship.

Backlash can create backlash can create backlash can create backlash until someone steps in to stop the cycle... or everyone is dead. Cyclical backlash is a very close relative to revenge killings in the Middle East. When a member of one family or tribe kills someone from a different family or tribe, the different one has an obligation to kill someone from the first tribe. Then the first tribe has an obligation to... and on and on and on. Unless there is some sort of formal truce, the vengeance killing can go on for centuries.

We're looking at two different sides of a cultural and cyclical backlash: same-sex marriage was proclaimed legal by the city of San Francisco. Politicized religious groups began to object by making some states ban the practice. Gay rights groups made marriage equality their marching banner.

Then came the Christian Right's backlash: California's Proposition 8.

The campaign saw both sides shouting about "freedoms" and "rights". The Christian Right kept saying that they had God on their side. In fact, they blamed God ("God WANTS us to do this!"). The humanists (yes, including Christian homosexuals) said that their marriage rights were basic human rights.

On Nov. 4, the campaign for Proposition 8 was won after one of the most vicious, misleading and unbelievably criminal campaigns ever experienced. It involved extortion, out-of-state money and manpower from churches, outright lies, and, most of all - mongering of hate and fear.

So now a counter backlash has been set in motion: Saturday, Nov. 15th will see a NATIONAL protest against California's Proposition 8. A protest of epic, if not historic proportions.

Maybe Stonewall was Activism 1.0, ACT UP was Activism 2.0, the failed corporate activism of HRC and No On Prop 8 was Activism 3.0, and now we are witnessing Activism 4.0 being born....

And on this Saturday, in California alone, it is set to happen in Bakersfield, Chico, Colton, Costa Mesa, Delano, Escondido, Eureka, Fairfield, Fresno, Irvine, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Moreno Valley, Napa, Oakland, Palm Springs, Pasadena, Pomona, Riverside, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, Stockton and Ventura. And that's just as of today. With the speed of "viral" organizing, the list could be twice as long by Saturday.

Question: how will people view this kind of "activism"? Will some see it as a kind of anarchy? Will it cause another, more virulent backlash? How many Christofascists will be counter-protesting? Will this new activism cost lives?

It might.
