The Mad Hatters, Cheshire Cats and White Rabbits of Today's Politico-religious Theater

How the Crazies in Religion Are Leading Us Down The Rabbit Hole

It's all a little like Alice in Wonderland, when you look at the Religion of Politics and/or the Politics of Religion these days. If you remember from your Lit I class, Alice In Wonderland is a classic of Literary Nonsense:

Literary nonsense refers to a genre of literature, whether poetry or prose, that plays with conventions of language and logic through a careful balance of sense and non-sense elements. Its strict adherence to structure is balanced by semantic chaos and play with logic. Usually formal diction and tone are balanced with an inherent topsy-turvyness and absurdity. The effect of nonsense is often caused by an excess of meaning, rather than a lack of it.

So religion - or our current religious political forces - are turning our world topsy-turvy while telling us that that is the only way our world should be:

George W. Bush was "Born Again" by talking with Billy Graham (once) and entered his idea of Compassionate Conservatism into the political maelstrom. Like the Cheshire Cat, it seems to have become invisible. Billy Graham is not looked upon as a "crazy" in religion, but rather a proto-crazy, allowing for all the others to act crazy while pretending to emulate him.

George told Pat Robertson that God wanted him to lead the nation and that if he went to war in Iraq, there would be no casualties. Sounds like something uttered at a Tea Party.

Robertson and others have remained steadfast in their support of Israel - the nation-state, not the people who are Jews and definitely not Christians. Robertson and his Christians know that The Rapture implied in the Bible cannot happen until Israel gains all of its promised land.

John McCain's spiritual advisor, Rod Parsley wants everyone to know that the REAL purpose of the Declaration of Independence and the Revolutionary War were to become a nation with the sole purpose of destroying Islam. When he goes on about homosexuality and feminism and all the ills of the country, Parsley does seem to rattle on like the white rabbit. We're all late for that important date: nuking Iran. Of course, since Parsley is also a "prosperity theology" preacher, nuking Iran would somehow be very, very profitable and bring us all the rewards we've been praying for.

Pastor John Hagee warns everyone that the Catholic Church is the REAL Anti-Christ and says that the Bible calls it "The Great Whore" conveniently forgetting that the Bible meant either Babylon or Rome (without the pope). He waxes bombastically from his books like the Mad Hatter, expecting everyone to believe his faulty logic.

Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Obama's mentor, has called upon God to damn the U.S. for all the things it's already admitted to doing. His pulpit emits the grandeur of his calling and inspiration, a little like the Queen of Hearts.

Dont' you wish, in a sense, that all of this really WAS part of Alice in Wonderland because, in the end, it would all turn out to be a dream.

Which character would you attribute to which politician or preacher?

From Mary Astor to Barack Obama: The Associations Just Never Go Away

To Hell With The Truth! Give Us
The Real Dirt and The Real Sex!

The Public will continue to believe what it wants to believe. It will also remember what it wants to remember. Politicians know that. Some people still believe that Saddam Hussein hid weapons of mass destruction. Some people believe that Grand Duke Alexi, heir to the Imperial throne of Russia, might still be alive. When I was very little, I had heard the name Joe McCarthy bandied about with Communism. I had also heard the name of Mary Astor - something to do with torrid sex. I later learned why McCarthy and Communism were mentioned in the same sentence, but I never learned about Mary Astor and her infamous diary until many years later.

For decades, people talked about Astor's diary as if it were a sex manual and body- part-by-body-part tour of all the great men of Hollywood. People were amazed she got any roles after the diary was mentioned in a court child custody case she had with her ex-husband.

The reality was that the press and rumors led the diary to be "shocking" to this day.

Excerpts of what she wrote about her marriage and affair with Kaufman were then released by Thorpe's lawyers to the press, who dubbed it the "purple diary," although it was actually penned in Aztec brown ink and not purple, and it became headline news. Although the excerpts in the papers were fairly harmless, with romantic and sentimental chatter and no intimate details, lurid tales of sexually explicit contents began to circulate. No one ever actually read the authentic diary, however, and such reports of its contents were purely speculative.

When Thorpe surrendered the diary to the court it was impounded and the full contents never revealed. The judge was only concerned with the welfare of the child. Astor wanted her diary back, while Thorpe asserted it should be returned to him. The judge ordered that the diary be stored in a safe deposit box, sealed against prying eyes. In April 1952, with no objection from Astor or Thorpe, the diary was destroyed, unread, by order of the court.

Picture of a very young Mary Astor who admited that she had had
sexual relations with John Barrymore when she was 18. But,
then again according to Barrymore, hadn't everybody?

On Sunday, Senator Barack Obama will again take questions (on Meet the Press) from Tim Russert who grilled him rather tenaciously about his association with his former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright of the Trinity Church in Chicago. For some people, the questioning was out-of-line and tedious but to some people, it may not have badgered Obama enough.

Posted by Hugh Hewitt on TownHall.com, the following would be the questions he (Hewitt) would ask Obama (think of them being asked in rapid-fire fashion)

What year did you join Trinity Church?
How often did you attend services there?
When you attended the Million Man March, did you go with a group of men from Trinity?
Did you see Pastor Wright on that trip?
How often would you see Pastor Wright in a setting away from church.
Did you go out to dinner together? Socialize together? Travel together?
I'd like to know about your friendship with Bernadine Dohrn and William Ayers.
They hosted an event for you when you ran for state senate, right?
You and William Ayers served on a foundation board together, correct?
So how well do you know them and how often have you seen them over the past dozen years?
Did you ever socialize with them?
Let's talk about Tony Rezko.
He helped you buy your house?
Did you have any other business dealings with him at all?
Did you socialize with him? Attend events at his home?
Do you think the country has made great progress on race relations?
Do you believe the government had anything to do with inventing AIDs?

Whew! Why do I feel the the next question would be: "Are you now, or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?"

No matter what the Rev. Wright did or didn't do, Obama's association with him will always be on the minds of people. The Right-wing minds know that. They don't care how Obama answers these kinds of questions. They just want the questions to keep on coming.

Mary Astor weathered the press and the public's image of her to become an esteemed, award-winning actress. Can Obama overcome the pointed viciousness of right-winged minds?

Legacies to Look For

May 2nd:

Today is rather weird for me because almost nothing seems to link up. I mean, look at the section for This Day in History. There are some incredibly great themes here: McCarthy, da Vinci, Good Housekeeping, Loch Ness Monster and J. Edgar Hoover and the KJV Bible! Any one of these inspires me to write volumes on it. But nothing really seems to match up with today's headlines.

McCarthy: a senator who went crazy about Communism. He was almost unstoppable! Fame and power seemed to swell him to unreal proportions. He only had to point a finger at someone, say "Communist!" and that person's life was effectively over. He was reminiscent of Chicago's Mayor Richard J. Daly Sr. in the 1950s. If a Chicago alderman was saying something Daly didn't like, he merely flicked a small switch underneath his voluminous desk and that person's microphone was shut off. Very subtle.

And who could forget the rumors about J. Edgar "Mary" Hoover? Here was another demigod who used the FBI to catch the people he didn't like in compromising situations.

The Loch Ness Monster? You've got to give it credit for keeping tabloids in the black for over 75 years. It's been one monster we've wanted to see for a very long time.

And what's the scene with the Yelwa massacre? Christians took their revenge upon Muslims in an unprecedented way:

Two months after the churches were razed (in numerous attacks by Muslims), Christian men and boys surrounded Yelwa. Many were bare-chested; others wore shirts on which they’d reportedly pinned white name tags identifying them as members of the Christian Association of Nigeria, an umbrella organization founded in the 1970s to give Christians a collective and unified voice as strong as that of Muslims. Each tag had a number instead of a name: a code, it seemed, for identification. They attacked the town. According to Human Rights Watch, 660 Muslims were massacred over the course of the next two days, including the patients in the Al-Amin clinic. Twelve mosques and 300 houses went up in flames. Young girls were marched to a nearby Christian town and forced to eat pork and drink alcohol. Many were raped, and 50 were killed.

Maybe it's because the above-mentioned themes are too obvious or too popular, all "larger-than-life" to compare to today's headliners. The Obama/Clinton race is getting tedious. Bashing Rev. Jeremiah Wright has gotten to be so lopsided with everyone jumping on the proverbial bandwagon that you sense the American public isn't being as entertained as they want to be out of this conflict. The Fundamentalist Mormon "scandal" (what should we call it?) seems to be something everyone should have known about much sooner - was there a conspiracy to cover up what was going on in El Dorado? Only one "escapee" got to tell her story (in the form of a book), but relatively few people paid any attention. What got the public's attention were the videos showing the Fundamentalist Mormon take on "Stepford Wives," and how the mothers feel their children were stolen from them. (Makes no difference, of course, that even the older children have difficulty in pointing out their mothers and fathers with any certainty. Oh, and it's the greatest dream of every 13 year-old girl to be married to a man old enough to be her grandfather (and have as many babies as she can!)

Is today's ennui the cause of the media? Perhaps some of it, but will any of today's headlines have any "legacy" at all? I doubt it.

Maybe tomorrow will bring us something with more depth.

In the meantime, allow me to share with you a provocative picture, one evoking individuality, loneliness or serenity. It's titled: "Who Will Sit There?"

Is The President An Idiot? Shhhh...It's A SECRET!!

EVERYTHING in Washington is a SECRET (POOF!)

The Illuminati, Opus Dei, Skull and Bones, Bohemian Grove -

THEY'RE SCARIER THAN TERRORISTS!

Let's face it, our current administration has been one big secret from the American public. When he came into office, George Bush had his papers as Governor of Texas sealed up and placed under lock and key in his father's Presidential Library. He's constantly denied Congress access to everything but the White House guest bathroom. When he leaves, we still won't know what he knows.

Did you know that a large percentage of our diplomatic corps (esp. ambassadors) hail from George's alma mater, Yale University and, more interestingly, from the secret society Skull and Bones (formerly known as The Brotherhood of Death)? Yes, George is known for his (often ill-placed) loyalty to others, but to give the fate of our diplomacy into the hands of cronies from a secret club is very odd (stupid too, but odd all the same). Here's a description of S&B:

Skull and Bones is known for its secrecy. Mid-nineteenth century Yale enjoyed the presence of freshmen, sophomore and junior societies. Undergraduates then, with their fickle allegiances, would share the rights and practices of their class society upon elevation within the undergraduate ranks. When seniors departed campus, little verifiable information was left about the rites and practices of the senior or secret societies, particularly Bones, then Scroll and Key, and then Wolf's Head. George W. Bush, in his autobiography, states "[in] My senior year I joined Skull and Bones, a secret society, so secret, I can't say anything more." When asked what it meant that he and Bush were both Bonesmen, former presidential candidate, and current U.S. Senator from Massachusetts, John Kerry said, "Not much because it's a secret".

The Illuminati

The Illuminati will once more be in the news thanks to (Da Vinci Code) Dan Brown, whose book, Angels and Demons, will be given the Ron Howard treatment. As with Opus Dei (see below), Dan Brown gives the Illuminati credit for some very nefarious goings on. The "all-seeing" eye on the dollar bill is attributed to the mysterious symbols of this group. These days, the Illuminati can stand for a number of things, similar to "the intelligensia". There are implications even, of a link to the concept of "New World Order" - the title of one of Pat Robertson's books and the peripheral subject of his paranoid conspiracy theories (The Anti-Christ definitely comes from the Illuminati - gasp! See below).

The eye above the pyramid is popular among conspiracy theorists, and alleged to have connections with the Illuminati secret society. There have also been associations made from the pyramid to the Illuminati because it has thirteen steps. The eagle on the one-dollar-bill is also carrying thirteen arrows and thirteen leaves. Furthermore, if a star of David is made on the pyramid, the letters will spell out the word "Mason" in reference to the group of Free Masonry. The history of the dollar bill was featured on The History Channel's "Decoding The Past" program.

[The Name Illuminati] Historically, it refers specifically to the Bavarian Illuminati, an Enlightenment-era secret societyeighteenth century. However, in modern times it refers to a purported conspiratorial organization which acts as a shadowy power behind the throne, allegedly controlling world affairs through present day governments and corporations, usually as a modern incarnation or continuation of the Bavarian Illuminati is often used in reference to a New World Order (NWO). Many conspiracy theorists believe the Illuminati are the masterminds behind events that will lead to the establishment of such a New World Order. Confusing the issue further is the fact that there are also several modern fraternal groups which include the word "Illuminati" in their names.

Opus Dei

Rumor has it that Justice Antonin Scalia wears a celice under his robes (a kind of barbed-wire-looking silver chain traditionally tied around the thigh to cause extreme discomfort, sometimes tight enough to produce blood). You see, people have suspected him of being a member of Opus Dei, the secret Catholic society featured in The Da Vinci Code. He certainly makes no secret of being the "moral" arm of the Supreme Court. But how ethical is extreme secrecy in a Supreme Court Justice?

Critics state that Opus Dei is "intensely secretive"— for example, members generally do not disclose their affiliation with Opus Dei in public, and under the 1950 constitution, members were expressly forbidden to reveal themselves without the permission of their superiors. This practice has led to much speculation about who may be a member. Opus Dei has been accused of deceptive and aggressive recruitment practices such as showering potential members with intense praise ("Love bombing"), instructing numeraries to form friendships and attend social gatherings explicitly for recruiting purposes, and requiring regular written reports from its members about those friends who are potential recruits.

Bohemian Grove

While everyone WANTS to be at a gathering at Bohemian Grove, no one will actually admit to attending. Rumors of the antics of the rich, famous and the powerful (some naked) have been circulating for the hundred years the Grove has been in existence. The HUGE intimidating owl is also very strange.

Since the founding of the club, the Bohemian Grove's symbol has been an owl, and a forty-foot concrete owl symbolizing knowledge stands at the head of the lake in the Grove and, since 1929, has served as the site of the yearly "Cremation of Care" ceremony. The club's motto, Weaving Spiders Come Not Here, is taken from the second scene of Act 2 from A Midsummer Night's Dream; it signifies that the Grove is limited to exchanges about mutual concerns and is characterized by the term "the Bohemian Spirit."

The Club's patron saint is John of Nepomuk, who legend says suffered death at the hands of a Bohemian monarch rather than disclose the confessional secrets of the queen. A large wood carving of St. John in cleric robes with his index finger over his lips stands at the shore of the lake in the Grove, symbolizing the secrecy kept by the Grove's attendees throughout its long history.

The Cremation of Care is rather disturbing in that it allows no conscience at all. OK, if you're going to romp in the nude with heads of state and powerbrokers, a conscience is probably the last thing you need!

Secrecy: to rule, to repent, to romp. Why? Maybe if people found out what the gods are doing, they would only be regarded as silly, ordinary fools.

The Cremation of Care ritual at the Bohemian Grove
Kind of looks like a bad production of AIDA

Help George Bush Pick The Honorable Way Out: A Gun? Some Hemlock? Maybe An Asp?

...There Is No Honorable Way Out For Cheney*

April 30, 2008

Today marks the 63rd anniversary of Hitler's death. Actually his and Eva von Braun's suicides. There have been many suicides done to avoid facing disgrace: one Gospel account says that Judas hung himself. Cleopatra embraced an asp. The tradition of Hara Kiri in Japan is very old. And while many religions today preach that suicide is a sin, there many famous (an infamous) people who committed suicide:
Among the famous who have taken their own lives are Boudicca (Queen of the Iceni in Britain), Brutus, Mark Antony, Cleopatra, Hannibal, Nero, Virginia Woolf, Sadeq Hedayat, Sigmund Freud, Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun, Ernest Hemingway, Alan Turing, Sylvia Plath, Marina Tsvetaeva, Yukio Mishima, Hunter S. Thompson, Ludwig Boltzmann, Kurt Cobain, and Vincent van Gogh.

To President George W. Bush: Mr. Persident, have you ever considered the way out of nobles, kings and philosophers? Would you force the nation into honor killing? Like a daughter or wife who scandalized her family, would you continue to shame us with your presence? Consider it: suicide as a less ignominious way to bow out, then think (if you can) of that horrible day - Jan. 20, 2009 when someone you know who does not have the personal blessing of God is sworn in! Think of the day when a disgruntled populace finally feels it has the time to place you and Dick Cheney and many of your cohorts in front of a world court to try for war crimes! Or think of the shame Mrs. Bush (both of them) would feel if you were to wind up indefinitely - at Guantanamo!

Think, Mr. Bush! Think! How, you ask, should it be done? Here are some classic ways:
  • Bullet to the head or in the mouth. Someone just has to tell you: “It’s just licorice, George. But pull the trigger and you’ll get a mouthful of bourbon!"
  • Falling on a sword – very showy and classy. And, like any lame duck President, it takes someone else to clean up the mess.
  • Hanging – not very pretty, and besides, it turns you a sickly blue. Not the kind of color you want, being a Republican and all.
  • Poison – if hemlock was good enough for Socrates, it’s certainly good enough for you!
  • Falling in front of a moving vehicle, most effectively a train. Cars don’t count, because 4 out of 5 drivers may want to kill you anyway, but with your luck, you'd be getting that 5th driver again and again.
  • Jumping out of a window – no, George, not out of a basement window!
But creativity really counts for something in the US. You could: Ø Ask Nancy Pelosi to strangle you! Ø Ask James Dobson to spank you to death! Ø Walk on the streets of New York without Security Ø Accompany Jay Leno on one of his “Jaywalks” and tell people you really are George W. Bush

Join these people. Become one of their rank and honor:

As for Vice President Dick Cheney, he's a little more difficult to convince. He's way too busy shooting other people to shoot himself. And he knows guns too. Just look at the way he handled the one given to him by the National Rifle Association:

He's also too tough to be strangled, poisoned or run over by a train. I suppose he could nuke himself, but that would endanger too many of his corporations (supporters) with fallout.

So I guess it's up to you, George, to do the honorable thing.

Think of the Alternative!

*Please note that the theme of this post is written as satire. Under no circumstances do I advocate violence against the President and his administration or suicide as a viable alternative for explaining the actions of the current administration.

Impeaching Paradise: Why Hasn't It Happened Yet?

The mind is its own place, and in it self
Can make a Heav'n of Hell, a Hell of Heav'n.
- John Milton - Paradise Lost

George bush has made a heaven for himself out of the hell of his administration. His dimwitted "freedom for everyone" attitude has fooled nobody but himself. Maybe he's starting believe in his own lies - and, therefore, his own snake oil. (Stress OIL).

Back in 2001, a pre 9-11 United Nations very astutely tagged the U.S. as a rogue nation. They obviously knew something the American public didn't. After 9-11, George got his dream come true: to go to war - any war - with Iraq! Life was good!! The White House was Paradise and Crawford, Texas was Eden! The Prime Minister of Great Britain championed George. Even the island nation of Tonga came to embrace his cause!

Vice President Cheney was also in his heaven: making deals with Halliburton and Enron so that the war would bring spectacular returns (for whom, was not yet disclosed).

Oh, there were rumblings of lies about Saddam Hussain, WMDs and the knowledge of civil war without an exit strategy, as well as murmurs of illegal empowerment, but Bush and Cheney dismissed these as unpatriotic.

But the rumblings continued:

Salon.com - Nicholas Thompson, July 24, 2003:

Lying about war is more serious than lying about sex -- which is why the president's free ride is coming to an end.

Conservative Republicans like to compare George W. Bush to Ronald Reagan, characterizing him as a masculine Everyman, traditionally conservative and regularly underestimated because of his low-key manner. Liberals like to compare him with his father, who seemed Reagan's tightly wound, Ivy League, career-climbing opposite -- and a one-term president to boot.

Sorry Nick, but, ah, that didn't happen. You were thinking in 2003 terms. We're now in 2008 terms with over 4000 soldiers dead and buried.

MSNBC poll taken Dec. 21, 2005: 89% thought Bush deserved impeachment.

Elizabeth Holtzman, The Nation, Jan. 11, 2006:

Finally, it has started. People have begun to speak of impeaching President George W. Bush--not in hushed whispers but openly, in newspapers, on the Internet, in ordinary conversations and even in Congress. As a former member of Congress who sat on the House Judiciary Committee during the impeachment proceedings against President Richard Nixon, I believe they are right to do so.

From the Impeach Bush Coalition.com, Aug. 2007:

I am giving serious consideration to turning off the clock. Up until now I have held out hope that the Congress of the United States of America would finally come to its senses and Impeach George W. Bush for his admitted criminal violation of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). Today, that hope is just about gone.

I just read this, Democrats Feel Pressure on Spy Program, in the New York Times. The fact that the Bush administration is trying to get FISA re-written to cover its prior illegal acts should be the final piece of evidence needed to indict (impeach) him. Bush has been arguing since he admited violating FISA that he always had the authority to do so. If he is asking for the authority now, he didn't have it then. Slam dunk, folks.

From the Impeach Bush website:

News and Current Actions:

4/24/08 - Oakland Town Hall Forum with David Swanson, Phil Burk, Medea Benjamin, Elizabeth de la Vega and others. 7-9 PM, Grand Lake Theater, Oakland, CA [PDF]

Please support HR24, the New Hampshire Impeachment resolution introduced by Betty Hall.

The new "Nixon Plan" calls for a flood of impeachment resolutions from concerned members of Congress.

Please call the Judiciary Committee and urge them to join Rep Wexler in his call for impeachment hearings.

Bush and Cheney have only 8 months more in office - four of which will be taken up by an election overshadowing their misdeeds.

What's holding everything up? Public apathy. Their administration created the messes, but now the public has to focus on other people getting us out of them.

George and Dick next January: still in Paradise? Let's hope not.

But if they fall, they will reverse their attitudes towards their fate just as the Angel of Light did:

Is this the Region, this the Soil, the Clime,
Said then the lost Arch-Angel, this the seat
That we must change for Heav'n, this mournful gloom
For that celestial light? Be it so, since he
Who now is Sovran can dispose and bid
What shall be right: fardest from him is best
Whom reason hath equald, force hath made supream
Above his equals. Farewel happy Fields
Where Joy for ever dwells: Hail horrours, hail
Infernal world, and thou profoundest Hell
Receive thy new Possessor: One who brings
A mind not to be chang'd by Place or Time.
The mind is its own place, and in it self
Can make a Heav'n of Hell, a Hell of Heav'n.

What matter where, if I be still the same,
And what I should be, all but less then he
Whom Thunder hath made greater? Here at least
We shall be free; th' Almighty hath not built
Here for his envy, will not drive us hence:
Here we may reign secure, and in my choyce
To reign is worth ambition though in Hell:
Better to reign in Hell, then serve in Heav'n.

~John Milton, Paradise Lost, Book I

You can count on it.

Shirley Dobson's National Day of Bigotry and Politics?

...or a National Day of (Christians ONLY) Prayer?

May 1 is National Day of Prayer day.

Definition:

The National Day of Prayer is a day designated by the United States Congress as a day when all Americans regardless of faith are asked to come together and pray in their own way.

However, the National Day of Prayer Task Force phrases things differently:

"Americans of all faiths are encouraged to participate in the [National Day of Prayer] according to their own traditions. However, the [National Day of Prayer] Task Force [only] provides promotional materials and sponsors several events in keeping with the Judeo-Christian tradition". The application for volunteer coordinators with the Task Force lists the following as a primary qualification, "Commitment to Christ. A volunteer must be an evangelical Christian who has a personal relationship with Christ. I acknowledge that I am working for the Lord Jesus Christ and the furthering of His Work on earth and agree to perform my work with the highest standard of Christian faith."

Hmm...I thought that this country was founded to be a refuge for everyone - not an exclusive club.

This is definitely an "Evangelical Christians ONLY" club day. The inconsistencies in the above statement seem just a bit ridiculous: "Judeo-Christian" but "evangelical Christian" means absolutely no practicing Jews allowed.

Right-wing Christians must use qualifiers: "Prayer" is NOT NECESSARILY CHRISTIAN! If
you're going to exclude whole groups of people, call it for it is intended to be: The National Day of Christian-ONLY Prayer.

It is NOT a day for:

Hindu prayer
Sikh prayer
Muslim prayer
Shinto prayer
Progressive Christian prayer (everyone who is not a True Evangelical Fundamentalist)
Catholic prayer (it's too ritualistic)
...and, ah, sorry but no Jewish prayers either: "God Almighty does not hear the prayers of a Jew" (Bailey Smith, past President of the Southern Baptist Convention). So why would they bother?

Shirley Dobson:, since you're the leader of Task Force, I'll address this to you:

The diversity (gasp!) of America is not celebrated by exclusivity. Freedom of Religion means freedom to practice religion. It's what allows people like Fred Phelps to picket soldiers' funerals (yes, freedom of speech too) John Hagee to call Catholicism heresy, and Pat Robertson to blame 9-11 on gays. However, it also allows all Americans to pray in whatever way they wish, or not to pray in any traditional sense. To imply that the National Day of Prayer is for Christians ONLY is to distort the meaning of an American freedom. If you must, call your group the National Day of Christian Prayer Task Force. If you're not afraid to be labeled "Christian" - it makes things much clearer. Of course, if you want to be truly correct in your group's name, it should be The National Day of Christian Politically Conservative Prayer, but that would be too long and too many of us in the US suffer from ADD as it is.

***

To diverge slightly:

Diversity in religion has certainly brought out the best, worst and oddest in America. When I researched "On This Day", I came across a name that very softly whispered in my memory of history: Father Divine. I looked him up in wikipedia.com and here's just a small part of what I found out about this preacher who believed he was God and founded the International Peace Mission Movement:

Father Divine traveled south, where he preached extensively in Georgia. In 1913, conflicts with local ministers got him sentenced to 60 days in a chain gang. While serving his sentence, several prison inspectors were injured in an auto accident, which he viewed as the direct result of their disbelief.

Upon release, he attracted a following of mostly black women in Valdosta, Georgia. He taught celibacy and the rejection of gender categorizations.

On February 6, 1914, several followers' husbands and local preachers had Divine arrested for lunacy. This actually expanded his ministry, with reporters and worshippers deluging his prison cell. Some whites even began calling on him. One white follower, J. R. Moseley, arranged for J. B. Copeland, a respected Valdosta lawyer, to represent him pro bono. Father Divine was found mentally sound in spite of "maniacal" beliefs.

***

And for another diversion: Happy Birthday, Carol Burnett! I wish YouTube had a better version of the most famous comedic lines in history, but here it is, in tribute to you:
